5 Tips for Radiant Skin This Summer!

Radiant skin is a must all the time, but especially during the summer. It is even more important this summer because a good many of the fashion trends require us to show off a good bit of skin with off the shoulder tops, deconstructed tops, maxi dresses, shorts, and more; I love it!

Hello, beautiful ones! I pray that you’re doing exceedingly well!

If you know anything about me, you now know that I am going to look to nature first to make sure my skin is gleaming. There are several all-natural, organic ways and methods that I am using to make sure my skin is healthy, youthful, smooth, bright, and glowing while defying the aging process simultaneously.

These are the five (5) key areas that I’m focusing on to ensure my melanin is poppin’ this summer:

A healthy, nutrient rich diet & hydration.

You’ve heard it many times, but I’m going to repeat it: what shows up on the outside is a result of what you’re putting on the inside. If your diet consists of greasy foods, sugars or salty foods, you’re not doing your skin, or your body for that matter, any good. On the other hand, if you eat healthy foods, like those listed below, your skin will thank you!

Best foods:

  • Green Tea
  • Turmeric
  • Chia seeds
  • Nuts
    • Walnuts
    • Hazelnuts
    • Almonds
  • Veggies
    • Carrots
    • Sweet potatoes
  • Fruit
    • Citrus fruits such as lemons
    • Tomatoes
    • Berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries)
    • Watermelon
    • Avocados
    • Coconut (water, the meat & the oil)
  • Fish, especially those high in Omega-3s
    • Tuna
    • Salmon
    • Mackerel
    • Trout
  • Lean meat
    • Beef
    • Chicken
    • Turkey
  • Leafy vegetables
    • Spinach
    • Kale
    • Collard greens
    • Broccoli
  • Dark chocolate
  • Whole grain bread & cereals

These foods provide key nutrients such as antioxidants (Vitamin C & E) & proteins. Antioxidants minimize and or block the chemicals that cause sun damage and slow down the formation of wrinkles, dark spots, fine lines, and other signs of aging. Protein provides the necessary assistance the body needs to produce the key nutrient to keep the skin elastic and tight, which helps to reduce wrinkling of the skin: collagen. It also helps to reduce tears and cracks in the skin as well as skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, eczema, and more. Additionally, the primary cause of wrinkling, inflammation, is dialed back by the Omega-3 fatty acids in fish.

And, the body gets a healthy dose of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Vitamin K when these foods are in your diet. They work together help to minimize dark spots, redness, excessive dryness, and rough areas. Vitamin A maintains & repairs the skin. Vitamin C fights cancer and aids in collagen production. Vitamin E protects the skin from sun damage. Vitamin K helps the body heal by aiding the blood clotting process which can minimize stretch marks, spider veins, and more.

Besides eating a healthy diet, it is imperative to review and adjust how much water we drink to ensure proper hydration. Drinking the right amount of water will help to prevent and or decrease saggy skin. I am not good at drinking water because I only drink when I’m thirsty. However, I’m working on drinking at least 32 ounces a day.

Organic skin care

If it’s in your kitchen you can more than likely use it on your skin. And, the beauty of using these items is that they are safe, easier to absorb into the skin and cost little to nothing. They are much better for your skin that than the various chemicals we can’t even pronounce that are found in over the counter products in retail stores. Below are a few items that I’ve used over the years to create masks, detox my skin, remove scars, minimize pimples, improve acne, and more:

  • Aloe vera juice & gels
  • Raw honey
  • Eggs
  • Cucumbers
  • Avocados
  • Onions
  • Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Lemons
  • Brown Sugar
  • Coffee grinds
  • Various oils
    • Extra virgin olive oil
    • Coconut oil
    • Avocado oil
    • Grapeseed oil

The recipe below is one of my favorite detox masks:

  • ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • ½ teaspoon Bragg’s Raw apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon of organic, raw, local honey
  • ½ teaspoon Greek yogurt
  • [optional] 1 drop lemon essential oil or fresh lemon juice for additional skin brightening

  1. Cleanse the face of all makeup, dirt & impurities.
  2. In a small bowl or jar, mix all the ingredients together. If you make it too thin it will be runny and make a mess. Make it thick enough to adhere to your skin.
  3. Apply the mask carefully, and make sure avoid your eyes.
  4. Let the mask set on your face for 15–20 minutes and then rinse with warm water.
  5. If you have any mask leftover cover it tightly and leave in the fridge for your next treatment.
  6. Use the mask 2x a week for best results.

Exercising on a regular basis does more for the body than keeping it fit & toned. It allows the skin and body to repair because it promotes better rest and sleep. Second, the body goes through a detox process during exercise. Toxins in the body are drawn out by the blood and oxygen flowing through the skin which causes the pores to unclog through sweating. To top that off, exercise gives the skin a radiant glow because of the dilated the blood vessels near the surface of the skin. I love walking with my boyfriend early in the morning to get my exercise in. We haven’t been doing this as regularly as we should, but every little bit helps.

Sunscreen with an SPF 15 or higher not only prevents skin darkening and skin damage due to UV rays but also minimizes the signs of aging, i.e., wrinkling and saggy skin. A good rule of thumb is to apply it at least 30 minutes before you head outside. Also, it should be used daily, especially on your face and hands, as they these are the two areas that are exposed to the sun the most. My favorite moisturizer is Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue in Sienna with SPF30. I recently started using the Supergoop! Forever Young Hand Cream with Sea Buckthorn SPF 40 and love it! I can already see the changes in my skin which are impressive considering it has only been a short time.

I exfoliate daily with a mild foaming sugar scrub or organic coffee scrub that are mixed with shea butter and Vitamin E to ensure that my skin does not become too dry. It removes the daily accumulation of dead skin on my body which can make the skin look dull and dry and allows the new skin cells to come to the surface. As a result, my skin glows year-round. Exfoliation is even more necessary as we age because skin cell regeneration slows down. You can create your own natural and organic scrub with ingredients that you have in your kitchen.

Here’s simple sugar scrub you can make in a jiffy:

  • Mix 3 cups of organic brown sugar
  • Add one cup of extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, or whatever oil you prefer.
  • Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil like peppermint, lavender, lemongrass, ylang ylang, etc. to lift your spirits and give your skin more love.
  • Mix well and apply to your skin. Your skill be amazingly soft and glowing!
